Kitchen Appliance Cleaning - Page 2

  • Refrigerator cleaner
A solution of half distilled vinegar and water is great for cleaning walls and shelves in the refrigerator.
  • Microwaves
Use a solution of vinegar and baking soda and water to clean up food splatters on the bottom, sides, and ceiling. Remove the turntable plate and wipe over the interior, being careful not to let any water drip through the holes in the walls. The turntable can be cleaned with the same solution.

  • Cleaning the top of the stove
Wet the area and sprinkle baking soda onto the tip. Let it sit for about 30 minutes before removing and rinsing off.
  • coffeemakers
Running baking soda and water through the machine will give it a good clean and refresh it. Rinse with plenty of clear water afterward to remove all traces of the baking soda.
  • Cleaning the refrigerator
I've always used baking soda solution to clean the inside of the refrigerator. For refrigerators that you had to turn off and defrost from time to time, I always wiped the trays and shelves with a strong solution. As well as cleaning up greasy marks it removes any odors from spills, milk bottle bottoms, and cheesy whiffs. With the larder fridge we have now, I remove any uncovered food, wipe down with paper kitchen towel before putting the food back in.

If you are planning on turning off your refrigerator while you are away on a long vacation, or are moving house and need to leave it switched off for a while, using baking soda is a good way to save time and prevent mold from forming. I use it to clean out the fridge-freezer in our home in France when we leave each time, leaving the doors open and the power off. The only time we went back to black moldy deposits in the freezer was when a helpful workman closed the freezer door (to be fair, he did think he was doing us a favor) and I hadn't given the shelves the treatment. On return, a quick wipe over with a solution of baking soda in cold water was all that was needed before starting up the unit again. Any stubborn stains that have sat at the back of the refrigerator for a while may be removed with a tablespoon of baking soda mixed with a squeeze of toothpaste.
  • Dishwasher de-odorozer
You can pour a cup of distilled white vinegar inside an empty dishwasher and run it through a whole cycle every month to remove soap build-up and odors.

  • cleaning out a coffeemaker
Fill the water reservoir halfway with vinegar and run the coffeemaker as you normally do, then run it once full of water. The coffeemaker will be spotless.
  • cleaning the refrigerator
Clean the refrigerator by washing with a solution of equal parts of water and vinegar.
  • Dishwasher powder
Instead of using a commercial brand of dishwashing detergent, try mixing two tablespoons of baking soda with two tablespoons of borax for a load.
  • Coffee pot cleaner
    2 cups (500ml) vinegar
    1 quart (1 liter) water

To make sure your drip-filter coffee pot produces a perfect brew every time, it's important to give it a deep cleaning about once a month to get rid of the mineral deposits and natural coffee oils that can build up. Pour the vinegar and water reservoir and turn the coffee maker on (adjust this amount depending on the size of your machine; just keep the ratio 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water). When the cycle is complete, turn off the coffee maker and let cool for 15 to 20 minutes. Pour the vinegar mixture down the drain, fill the water reservoir with fresh water only, and run the coffee maker again.
