Sugar - Other Uses

  • long-life flower water
1 quart (1 liter) warm water
    3 tablespoons (38g) sugar
    2 tablespoons (30ml) vinegar

Make fresh-cut flowers last as long as you can by placing them in the best possible water. For every quart (liter) of warm water, add 3 tablespoons (38g) sugar and 2 tablespoons (30ml) vinegar. Mix well to ensure the sugar is dissolved and use to fill your flower vase. The arrangement will stay fresher longer because the sugar helps nourish the flowers and the vinegar inhibits bacteria growth in the water.

  • getting rid of fruit flies
Put a bowl of cider vinegar out to attract fruit flies. The same can be achieved by washing the windows with cider vinegar, but that's probably not the effect you want. If this just attracts the flies but doesn't kill them, put one teaspoon of sugar, two teaspoons of cider vinegar, and several drops of dish-washing liquid in a small shallow plastic container. Fill up with water. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar, but the soap will kill them. Alternatively, take a small bowl and partially fill it with vinegar, then wrap it in plastic wrap. Poke a few pinholes in the plastic wrap, and the fruit flies will fly in but can't get out. Place the bowl wherever you see the fruit flies.

  • perking up cut flowers
Keep cut flowers fresh longer by adding two tablespoons of vinegar and one tablespoon of sugar to each 4 cups (1 liter) of water.
  • age spot antidote
    1/2 teaspoon (2g) sugar
    1/2 lemon

Age spots are honestly nothing to worry about, but they can be unsightly for those afflicted. The good news is that they respond to the gentle bleaching abilities for which lemons are legendary. To use, sprinkle the sugar on the cut side of the lemon half and then gently rub over the affected area for a few minutes. Repeat weekly, as necessary, until the dark spots fade.
